What Do You Know About Mood And Atmosphere

For the last few weeks in Te Ngahere we have been learning about mood and atmosphere. We had 3 texts to pick from, they were called The Promise, Mirror Image and Brave Flower. For my story I picked The Promise, The Promise is about 5 kids that are trapped in a bunker and there are bombs going on outside and they are arguing when the right time to go and get more resources. With the story we had to pick a small extract from the story and find all the language features like metaphors, similes, concrete nouns, verbs and adverbs. When we found a language feature we would try and find what mood the sentence made for example  The colours in the bunker were muted, fading in the grey shadows. The author uses the words muted, grey and fading to make a mood of gloom, and then we had to write why. When we finished we had to right a script to explain what we learnt for a DLO. Can you analyse a text for its mood and atmosphere?

Here is my script so far.

The Best Teacher Ever

At the start of the year we were so lucky to get a new teacher Whaea Shanna. Whaea Shanna is a really  funny  teacher and she loves sports. Later in the year Whaea Shanna gained confidence and got more interactive with us students. All throughout the year we have been doing a lot of P.E and sports and it has been really fun. Whaea Shanna has taught us  lots of skill in P.E like passing and catching using our teammates but also she teaches us Math, T-shaped and more. Whaea Shanna is one of my favourite teachers we have had at this school. Do you have a teacher as great as Whaea Shanna!?

What Do You Know About T Ball

n Te Ngahere we have been learning a game called T Ball. T ball is like cricket theres a fielding team and a batting team. If your on the batting team you hit the ball and when you hit the ball you drop the bat and run to the 1st base. If the batting team make it all the way round the field they get a home run. The fielding team have to try get the ball and get it to the base before the person on the batting team gets there. One hard thing was catching the ball also it was a bit hard hitting the ball off the t ball stand because sometimes you hit the stand and not the ball. An easy thing about it is throwing the ball to the base. Have you ever played T ball?

Amazing Adverbs And Verbs

For the past week in Te Ngahere we have been learning about adverbs and verbs.  We are doing this to identify the mood in stories. In our reading groups we made a google doc with three stories on it. In the three stories we had to find all the verbs and adverbs and write them down on our doc. When we finished that we did three other stories that I found harder because there were some words I didn’t know. I kind of enjoyed learning about the adverbs and verbs but at least now I have a better understanding on what they are. Do you know what adverbs and verbs are?

Amazing Cricket

Today in Te Ngahere Someone called Neil came to teach us some skills about cricket.  First he gave us some tips of how to hold the bat & how to stand properly. After he finished talking to us we got into pairs and started practising hitting the ball and fielding. After a few minutes of hitting and fielding we played a game called Non-Stop cricket. To play Non-Stop cricket there are two teams the batters and the fielders. Also there were only three bats. The batters job is to just hit the ball but if the fielders catch it they lose a bat. If the batters loose all of their bats the teams switch over. I really enjoyed playing and practising cricket and I hope Neil comes later in the term to teach us more skills. Have you ever played Non-Stop cricket?

The Best Holidays Ever!

Last Sunday I went to the rugby game in Whangarei. The game started at 2pm and it was Northland vs Southland. When we got there the two teams were doing some warm ups like practising their passing, catching and tackling. Both teams were pretty good. In the first half Northland was winning 11 to 7. But at full time it was 14 to 18 to Northland. After the game we got a picture with the mascot. It was really fun watching the game and I hope there is another one soon.

The Best Artwork Ever!

This week Te Ngahere have been doing art. For our art we have been practising to draw continuous lines and blend with coloured pencils. First we got a template that you could just see through the paper and then we had to draw with our shoulder for the out line. Drawing with your shoulder is like doing big long lines because if you draw with your wrist you can only do small and not as tidy lines. When we were really confident in ourselves we could start practising  blending with colored pencils. One of the things we can’t do is talk because our teachers say we need to really concentrate. I found the art quite fun and I can’t wait until we start our good copy. Do you use your shoulder to draw?

The Coolest App Ever!

This week we have been making music. For this we have been using an app called Chrome Music Lab. With this app you can create rhythms, moods, songs and more. Our goal was to learn about rhythm, then we created a tune that shows a mood. When we finished making a mood and rhythm we could make a song. What I found hard was timing, it was really hard to get the beats right on time. This app is really fun to use and learn about other ways of making music. Have you heard of seen the Chrome Music Lab app?

The Best Rippa Game!

This week in Te Ngahere we have been doing P.E. This week for P.E we have been playing rippa rugby. If you don’t know what rippa rugby is it's a game where there's two teams the team that starts with the ball has to tap the ball with their foot and pass back to one of their teammates  and then there teammate has to run and try get a try (goal) he can also pass to his teammates when he is running but he can only pass backwards. When we got to the field we were put into three teams. I was in the green team. For the first game it was the blue team vs the yellow team. Then it was our turn to have a game. We played the yellow team and lost 2 to 0 but we still played well and had fun. It was really fun playing rippa and I hope we can play again soon. Have you ever played rippa rugby before?

Stunning Te Reo

This week in Te Ngahere we have been practising our Te Reo. This time we were learning how to pronounce the weather in Te Reo. First we just practised pronouncing the kupu (words) then we started matching them with the pictures. When we finished practising, we started to play some games like maumaharatanga (memory) and Ika (Fish). I enjoyed learning the weather kupu. It was hard to pronounce some of the long words but we got there in the end. Do you know how to pronounce some maori kupu about the weather?

Our Best Rocket Launch Yet

This week we have been doing the wonder project and this time our rocket finally launched. If you saw my last post you would know that our rocket didn’t fly last time and it collapsed. This time  round we had to take our rocket apart because the fins and the bottle were broken from our last launch.  We changed our finns to smooth curved fins and then our rocket was ready to launch. We didn’t think our rocket would go that far, but when we launched it we were surprised how far it went. It only went 14 metres but it was still better than last time. Here is how our launch went.

Have you launched a rocket before?

Interesting Tips For Your Chromebook

Last week in Te Ngahere we learnt about the kawa of care for our chromebooks. We read all the rules and how to keep our chromebook safe. When we finished going over the rules we had to make a DLO of what we learnt. I liked learning about the kawa of care because now I know how to keep my chromebook safe. Here is my DLO.

Do you keep your chromebook safe?

The Best Wonder Project.

Last week Troy came to our school to talk about the thrust, weight  and how the rocket drags. Troy is an engineer who is part of the Wonder Project. He goes to different schools and teaches them about rockets too and this time he is at our school. He normally has a buddy called Gustavo but he was looking after his wife. When the rocket flies it is using thrust but when it runs out of thrust and starts coming down that is because of the weight. After he finished talking about the weight and thrust we went over to the field and launched a rocket made from a plastic bottle. When we launched it for the first time we only put it on 40 psi and it didn’t fly that high. Then we did it on 60 psi and it flew as high as the goal post. I really enjoyed this and I can’t wait until we make our own rockets. Have you ever done the Wonder Project before? Here is my rocket design

Awesome Te Reo

This week in Te Ngahere we have been learning about Te Reo Maori and how to pronounce the words properly. I liked learning new Te Reo words. We are learning to use the correct pronunciation of Te Reo Māori by reading the book called Ngā Mahi Pārekareka Kei Te Marae which means Fun At The Marae. We are practising reading the book so when we know how to say all the words properly we are going to read it to the little children. We are doing this so we get better at our pronunciation with maori words. Can you speak Maori?

Wonderful Mosaics

This week in Te Ngahere everyone made a mosaic on a google drawing. For my mosaic I did a kangaroo with my friend Ondreous. At the start we didn’t think it would look that good but then when we were finished we were surprised how it came out. A mosaic is a picture that is broken up into little pieces here is mine. We found it hard but it was worth it. Have you ever done a mosaic before?

Awesome P.E

This week we have been doing P.E and fitness. For the fitness we had five cones and each cone had its own exercise we had to do. We did sit ups,  burpees, ski jumps, crab walk, high knees and russian twists. For P.E we played a game called Universal Ball. Universal  Ball is a game where the teacher throws any ball up and if it is a netball you play netball and if its a soccer ball you play soccer. We also had to do some relay laps to practise for cross country that is coming up soon.  The P.E was fun and easy but the russian twists were hard for me.  I liked it because sports and P.E are my favourite things to do. Do you like P.E?

The Coolest Artwork.

This week we have been learning some skills to help us make a pou. A pou is a carving that represents someone or something. We drew poupou that represented our-self. We started with a practise pou first. Then we did our real one. First we drew lightly with pencil to get the outline. Then when we got our outline  we made the outline darker. Then we went over it with vivid and coloured it in with pastel. When we were doing our pastel it was important that you blended the pastel to give a nice effect. I used warm colours for my pou and cool colours for the background. Cool colours are like green blue purple and hot colours are red orange and yellow. I enjoyed doing art because is one of my favourite subjects at school. Do you like art?

Terrific League

This week we were taught about how to play league. First we ran around the field for a warm up then we practised passing and planting the ball. He taught us how to plant the ball to plant the ball you place it on the ground roll it back with your foot to the person behind you and they run. After everyone practised some skills with the ball, we played a game of touch. The score was 0-0 but it was still really fun! I think I could improve my passing by  making my passes more straight. Have you played league before?

The Best Paper Plane Trickshot Ever!

This term we have been doing trick shots. For this week’s trickshot we made a paper plane and we had to get it in our book box in the most creative way possible. My group made a glider a glider is a plane that glides and goes slow. When we made the glider we started getting our trickshot right. We had to make sure the wind was right for the glider to glide. First we threw our paper plane in the opposite direction as the wind and it did a backflip and glided down into the book box. Have you ever made a cool paper plane trickshot before? The video is on my trickshot post.

The Coolest Game Ever

The Coolest Game Ever.

This Term we have been doing p.e. For p.e we have been playing a game called four way capture the flag but we play with balls instead. The rules are there are four teams and they have their own box if someone comes in the box and gets tagged by that team they are frozen and they have to get tagged by their team to be freed. If someone gets in your square and picks up the ball that team can’t tag him and the person with the ball can either throw the ball or run with the ball to there square and risk getting tagged. This game is very fun and gets your blood pumping. Have you ever played this game before?

The Coolest Trickshot

This week we have been doing trickshots with ping pong balls. The rules where we had to make a ping pong ball go in a cup using cardboard and it had to take 3 or more seconds from start to finish. For my groups trickshot our ping pong ball rolled down a cardboard ramp and then it bounced off the wood into the cup. It took our group a long time because we kept changing ideas and moving places but finally we stuck with one idea. Have you ever done a cool trickshot before?

My Awesome Math Eyes

My Awesome Math Eyes

I am learning to identify math in the world around us. We looked at a picture of gingerbread men and had to use our maths eyes to notice things.
In the gingerbread photo I noticed colors, gingerbread, shoes, hats and buttons.
I learnt that everyone has math eyes. I tried hard to find all the math in the gingerbread photo.
Do you use your math eyes?

Turbo touch tournament

On Tuesday we had a turbo touch tournament if you don't know what turbo touch is you can read my previous blog post which explains all the rules. Anyway we had a huge tournament with the whole class. We got into groups of 6 or more then we told the teacher our group names. Then we started playing my team went first we were up against the Chigga team. We beat them, Then we went up against team Tokers we lost 2 - 3 my team and team Tokers are the two best teams in the class. You should give it a go have a try and you might enjoy it. I enjoyed everything but I think I can work on passing.

Swimming at the beach

Swimming At The Beach

On Monday Te Ngahere went to the beach for a swim. They could only go if they brought their notices back. We got changed at the pool and then we walked to the gate. When we got to the gate we walked across the road and made our way to the beach. When we got there we got into groups of four. We did freestyle, backstroke and breaststroke. When Gina said go we ran into the water and swam as hard as we could. Robert kept swimming out to sea so the adults had to rescue him several times. I enjoyed doing freestyle and breaststroke but I wasn’t really that good at backstroke. When we finished doing our lessons we got some free time.

Trip to waitangi

Trip To Waitangi
On Wednesday the year six’s went to the museum in Waitangi. In the museum there were photos of Maori who fought in the war, guns that were used  and vest’s of some people in the war. There was also this big circle of dots on paper and they had different colours and the colours mean different things. The blue dots meant world war one, the green was world war two and the grey dots meant wars in different countries and if they had a red dot by them it means that they passed away in the war. Then we got to see the new learning space and we got to make animations on scratch. On scratch I was good at making the backgrounds but I wasn’t that good at making the sprites move. I enjoyed looking around the museum and messing around on scratch.  Have you been to the museum before?

steam challenge

The tallest newspaper tower!!!

Last Tuesday Te Ngahere did a steam challenge. We  had to make the tallest tower out of two sheets of newspaper and 30 cm of tape. We did this in our learning groups. Everyone had different towers and different designs. We made two towers per group and had half an hour to do each one. My groups first tower failed because our tower didn’t have enough balance. Our second one worked because we had a bigger base and it was more stable. Our tower was 1 meter and 27 centimeters tall. In my group was me, Dale and Akira. Have you ever done this challenge before?

Turbo Touch

Turbo Touch
Last Friday te Ngahere played a game called turbo touch.  We had to get into groups of three to five. When we got into our groups the teacher picked two groups to play each other.  In my group was me, Pharell, Ondreous, Tahuri and Thea. The rules of turbo touch are to get into groups of three to five you will also need a rugby ball. When you’ve done that you tap and pass the ball to your teammate then your teammate runs to the try line but they can only hold the ball for two seconds or if someone touches you with two hands. You can pass forward backwards and sideways. If you get a trie your team wins.  I think my team has to work on  passing, catching and defence other than that i think we did a good job. We were really good at making strategies. Have you ever played turbo touch?
